Joel Jaffe’s 40 year tenure at Studio D is a testament to his expertise in production and music. Studio D’s design was heavily influenced by his personal experiences as a performing musician, and it’s this intention that made way for a dynamic and timeless acoustic space with performance in mind.
Having experienced the drastic evolution of the audio industry firsthand, he has always found himself on the forefront of technology. From operating tape, to being one of the first adapters of ProTools, then a successful surround mixer (in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos). It is clear that Joel’s skills have changed a great deal throughout his career, yet his musical approach and dedication to making great records has remained consistent.
Jimmy Mahoney

Studio Manager, Staff Engineer
Jimmy started at Studio D as an intern while also studying Jazz guitar in college, Jimmy quickly cemented himself as a fixture at Studio D, working as a 2nd engineer for any session that would come through the door. His approach to sound is heavily inspired by both classic and modern recording, and looks to make the most out of a project with all analog and digital tools available.
Zack Phillips

Zack Phillips loves recording music. He got his first Walkman at age-six and, ever since, has been captivated by the transportive power of song. Zack started his career in audio doing live sound while studying Music Recording at San Francisco State, but it was actually an internship at the Plant Studios that really brought him into the studio world.
Zack later joined the team at Hyde Street Studios where he recorded and mixed many great projects and went on to run a studio called FreqLab Recording for several years. He was the Chief Studio Tech at Expression College for two and a half years before finding a new home at Studio D Recording. Over the course of his career Zack has acquired a plethora of technical skills and knowledge which he uses to support the creative process. Zack is a certified Pro Tools Expert, a skilled systems designer and integrator, and a talented recording and mixing engineer.
